A Wake-up Call From My Sister

I was just on a family vacation and, honestly, I learned so much from my sister. I’ll admit, some of what I learned made me feel a little bit guilty.

We went grocery shopping together for the week for our kids, and more than once, I’d reach for something and she’d say, “Don’t get that one, it scores bad on Yuka.”

And I realized… I really haven’t been looking into these things as much as I probably should.

Did it make me feel a little bad? Yes. But instead of beating myself up for what I didn’t know before, I’m choosing to take it as a learning experience. Now I want to start paying more attention to the ingredients in the foods we’re buying and making little swaps when I can.

At the same time, I know there’s a fine line between becoming more informed and becoming completely obsessed with making every single choice “perfect.”

Because motherhood is already full of enough pressure.

So I’m reminding myself that balance matters, too. I can make better choices when I’m able to without feeling guilty when something isn’t perfect. Our kids can eat the birthday cake. They can have the fun snacks. And we can still be mindful about what we’re putting on their plates most of the time.

Maybe it’s not about doing everything perfectly. Maybe it’s just about knowing a little more and doing a little better when we can.
